Best Kids Band

The TimeOuts
Over the last few years, the alterna-parent movement has really taken off. One-time underground rocker Dan Zanes now plays to stadiums full of wee ones, while Ruby Skye's celebrated "Baby Loves Disco" dance parties have spread across the country. Texas scribe Neal Pollack even wrote a book about how to remain cool (i.e. smoke pot) and raise a kid. So it's no surprise that there are several S.F.-based bands for tots. While the Sippy Cups resort to gimmicks (one of the main "members" is a juggling unicyclist), the TimeOuts rely on clever, catchy tunes and an uncloying attitude, impressing children and adults alike. Formed in late 2006 by Tom Galbraith, Jim Galbraith, Greg Kim, and Lev Delaney — who also play as the Amazing Embarrasonics, a human karaoke band — the TimeOuts have thrilled audiences at Rickshaw Stop's "Pipsqueak a Go Go," Pollack's book release party at 12 Galaxies, and a New Year's Eve party at Oakland's Tumble and Tea kid-friendly cafe. The quartet is currently collaborating with the fifth graders of Starr King Elementary School for a show at the de Young Museum.
