San Francisco is one of America's most magnificent cities. We have magnificent views, magnificent weather, and enough culture to satisfy art snobs and kitsch lovers. Sure, we also have Robin Williams, but that isn't our fault. The point is that a bustling metropolis like ours has all kinds of clowns and heroes, as well as heroic clowns who perform at Fisherman's Wharf. If that weren't enough, we're also surrounded by gorgeous hills and gourmet eateries.

It's practically impossible to capture all of San Francisco's finer points in one newspaper, but we're going to try in our annual Best of San Francisco issue, which hits the stands on May 28. This year, we're making San Francisco the backdrop for some of our favorite comic-book styles, from Marvel superheroes to the nerds of modern underground comics.
